Impact Investments
“We strive to be the agent enabling investment in scalable, profitable Nature Based Solutions while generating measurable social and environmental transformation. As a central element of this transformation, we create strategic offtake agreements that de-risk, de-commoditize and ultimately reward sustainable food supply chains and help to meet netzero commitments of our clients.”
- Richard Focken, CEO of 12Tree
We work with impact-oriented investors that see an opportunity in achieving financial returns while improving environmental outcomes on the land and supporting the resilience of rural communities. As responsible stewards of the land, we strive to adapt our practices with a long-term view towards soil and water health, biodiversity, and communities. Our farm management and operational decisions are guided by the following set of principles:
REGENERATIVE, NOT EXTRACTIVE
We focus on a systems-approach to farming that seeks to improve natural resources rather than deplete them.
OUTCOMES-BASED CRITERIA RATHER THAN PRESCRIPTIVE PRACTICES
We strive to achieve healthy soils, healthy ecosystems, healthy communities and healthy climate. The exact portfolio of practices implemented will vary from farm to farm as do soil types and the natural resources vary from place to place.
LAND ETHICS
We adhere to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards, as well as sustainable farming certification standards such as UTZ/RA, FSC and Gold Standard, as frameworks for the management of environmental and social risks and impacts associated with the projects in our portfolio.
ROLE MODEL TO INSPIRE OTHERS
Through research we seek to inform practice and demonstrate a positive, replicable example of producing healthy food on healthy soils with fewer external inputs while generating market-rate financial returns for our investors.
CREATE VALUE FOR MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDERS
Acting with integrity and social responsibility means to create value for all stakeholders. We aim to create value for our investors, customers, farmers, employees, and broader communities, rather than simply profit to shareholders.
